After decades of public safety campaigns, the teen smoking rate is the lowest it’s ever been. Unfortunately, the new vaping craze has the potential to undo all that hard work in one blow, in part due to JUUL.
In 2018, nearly 5% of middle school students and over 20% of high school students reported vaping within the past 30 days. Many of these students had never smoked a traditional cigarette before vaping.
What most teens, young adults, and their parents may not know is that vaping can be just as, if not more, dangerous than using traditional cigarettes. Manufacturers like JUUL need to be held accountable for failing to warn users about the risks of their products, especially their potential to severely disrupt users’ daily lives, health, and happiness.
What is Vaping?
Vaping is the act of inhaling vapor, rather than smoke, produced by a vape device such as a JUUL. This vapor is not made of water, but instead by a mix of chemicals and usually nicotine.
What is JUUL?
JUUL (pronounced “jewel”) is a vape device that is incredibly popular with young people. As of 2018, JUUL products make up nearly two-thirds of all vape sales.
JUUL devices can be loaded with JUUL pods. These changeable, nicotine salt-based liquid cartridges are available in a variety of flavors, including fruit and candy flavors like Mango and Cool Mint, that are more attractive to young people than tobacco.
By using nicotine salt, rather than freebase nicotine like traditional cigarettes and other vape devices, JUUL can deliver significantly higher doses of nicotine that are absorbed into the body more easily and without the same rough throat hit. A single JUUL pod has as much nicotine as a pack of 20 regular cigarettes.
How to Recognize a JUUL Device
JUUL devices resemble a USB device, and can even be charged by being plugged into the USB port on a laptop. The JUUL device has been called “the iPhone of vapes” because of its sleek, minimalistic design.
JUUL devices are small enough to hide in a closed hand or pocket. Additionally, unlike a cigarette, the vapor cloud dissipates quickly without leaving behind a strong scent. This, combined with their deceptive appearance, makes them easy to hide, even in classrooms.
